Slightly different agendas across my classes today, since Period 3 needed to finish Part II chapter presentations. Periods 1 and 4 had an extended reading session to make up for no reading yesterday and to give some students a chance to start/continue/finish reading Part III of Things Fall Apart. After reading or presentations, all classes got started on one of my favorite assignments: Examining a conversation between Mr. Brown (missionary) and Akunna (Igbo native) about their respective religions. We do this by reading the conversation first; then, I assign students one character's perspective and have them create a poem using words from the conversation in Blackout Poetry fashion. Our goal for today was to complete steps 1-5 to create the poem; on Monday 4/17 they will work on creating the blacked out parts/illustration.
