Daily Annoucements
I post here daily about what we accomplished in class each day, including handouts and links available to students on my CANVAS site.
Welcome back from Labor Day! This will be a short week, having Monday as a holiday and Friday as an early release day.
Honors classes: Writing Standards: ACE paragraph. We started class with self-assessment of the hero ACE paragraphs drafted for homework. Then, students also completed a peer edit of the same paragraph with a partner. Finally, we completed a mini lesson on introducing quoted material in one's writing. Reading Standards: I introduced the Heroes of Ancient Myths unit by providing a one page overview of the unit. Then, we watched a video that explains the opening sections of the Epic of Gilgamesh up to the point where our excerpt begins. We read the introduction to our excerpt and used both the video and the introduction to analyze the early conflicts in the text and predict the effect those conflicts have on the plot and character development of the protagonist, Gilgamesh. Language Standards: Students received the vocabulary list for this unit and began finding definitions for those 15 words using personal devices. We will continue this process in class tomorrow. Homework: Work on revising C sentences of ACES paragraph in particular, but also on improving the areas we assessed in class today. Final draft will be due on Turnitin.com within a week. Exact date coming soon. Academic Class: Writing Standards: We started class by using the outline graphic organizer from Friday to draft each sentence of the Hero ACE paragraph, using laptops and saving the writing to Google Drive. I will read these drafts in Google Drive and then group students together later in the week for editing/revising. Reading Standards: I introduced our first literature unit, Heroes of Ancient Myths, by providing an overview of our objectives and assessments for this unit. Next, we watched a video that provides students an explanation of what happens in the core text, Epic of Gilgamesh, before the section we are reading in class. Then we read the textbook's summary of that same information and used both texts to analyze the early conflicts in the story and their effects on the plot and characterization of the protagonist. Language Standards: We returned to our vocabulary list to develop synonyms and antonyms for each of the 10 words on the list. Homework: Complete draft of Hero ACE in the Google doc if necessary.
